FIDE and Norway Chess have finalized qualification pathways for the Total Chess Tour 2026, a pilot event for the new world championship concept spanning Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz formats. The initiative aims to identify "The Total Chess Player" — someone excelling across multiple time controls.
The tournament will eventually consist of four annual events in global cities, awarding the title of FIDE World Combined Champion. A pilot event is scheduled for early-to-mid October 2026, with the full championship season beginning in 2027.
Qualification Pathways for Total Chess Tour 2026
Positions 1–2: Reigning World Champions — Gukesh Dommaraju and Ju Wenjun
Positions 3–5: Three medalists from the 2025 World Rapid Championship
Positions 6–7: Finalists of the 2025 World Blitz Championship
Positions 8–16: Top nine players on the classical rating list as of January 1, 2026
Positions 17–18: Winners of the 2026 Candidates and 2026 Women's Candidates
Positions 19–21: Top three classical-rated players as of June 1, 2026 (excluding prior qualifiers)
Positions 22–24: FIDE Circuit / FIDE Open Circuit winners via special ranking
Championship Details
The Tour features Fast Classic chess at 45 minutes plus a 30-second increment, rated as classical chess. The minimum annual prize pool is $2.7 million, including at least $750,000 per event for the first three tournaments and $450,000 for the Finals.
The inaugural pilot tournament is planned for October 2026, with the official championship season beginning in 2027.
